That's how my day starts. That's how every day starts. I'd complain, but who would listen?
No, really. Who the hell would listen?
I've been on EXO-909 for 34 years, doing this damned Planetary Existence Survey. Do you know what I've found?
Goose egg. Nada. Zilcho.
You'd think, that on a planet that could support life, I'd find some kind of marmot or an amphibian. Something I could domesticate, maybe.
A pet would be nice.
Something that doesn't shed.
I could train it to do tricks, make a little spot for it at the foot of my bed, and feed it my leftover rations.
I could name it Renaldo. Doesn't matter the sex of the creature. Renaldo is a good name. A strong name.
My Aunt Renaldo was a strong woman. She could bench press a whole unit of cargo and her voice was deep and smokey.
That was a woman.
I don't particularly recall which side of the family she came from, I just remember her showing up for Christmas after the summer my uncle Renaldo went away.
I wonder if they're related.
Perhaps cousins.
